Poltergeist Will Be Part Of Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights
Now that summer has started to wind down, many horror movie fans have started to look ahead to the spookiest time of the year. Halloween is right around the corner, which means theme parks will soon begin celebrating in the best ways possible. With that in mind, as we turn our attention to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios, the Hollywood and Orlando-based parks are apparently going to include mazes based on Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist.
Universal has officially announced that Poltergeist will join Halloween Horror Nights at the Hollywood and Orlando resorts this year. The event will take the form of a maze, in which guests will be chased by spirits themed after the malevolent entities from the classic horror film. This all will kick off on September 14, with the Poltergeist maze featuring plenty of iconic visual elements from the film -- including the flickering TV screen, evil spirits, and a creepy clown who has arguably become just as iconic as IT's Pennywise since the film debuted back in 1982. The mazes will recreate some of the most memorable scenes from the film, but add a new layer of interactivity to all of the legendary scares.

For those of you who are less familiar with Poltergeist, the 1982 film tells the tale of a family suffering a terrifying haunting once they discover that their house is built on a cursed native American burial ground. The Tobe Hooper-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced film has become legendary for its scares, as well as the late Heather O'Rourke's utterance of the line, "They're here!" With an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is widely regarded as a quintessential classic, has spawned numerous imitators, as well as one (arguably lackluster) remake.
The addition of Poltergeist to the Halloween Horror Nights lineup only represents the latest changes that Universal has made as the 2018 spooky season has descended upon us. Beyond Poltergeist, we know that the Orlando resort will also include "scare zones" inspired by the Child's Play franchise, as well as Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Is First Mans American Flag Controversy Affecting Its Box Office?
First Man hit movie theaters a couple of weeks ago and so far the box office has not been as noteworthy as expected. The film stars popular actor Ryan Gosling, has La La Land director Damien Chazelle on board and has earned critical acclaim. So, could it be the flag-planting controversy that is keeping people from not showing up?
A new study took a look at moviegoers who had been to the theater in the past 30 days. A total of 295 people were surveyed and of those, only a fourth had even heard that some people were upset First Man had just shown a planted flag rather than a full flag-planting scene. The survey, which was fulfilled by Business Insider and AlphaHQ, took a fairly small sample size, but only 17% of responders ended up saying they were skipping the movie thanks to the flag-planting debate.
That's a decent enough percentage, but probably not enough to make a huge impact on the box office for the Universal movie. In fact, most people who have seen the flick seem to have liked it at least pretty well, with First Man running at 88% for critics and 62% for regular viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
During its second weekend in theaters, First Man saw a big drop in box office intake. The flick dropped to fifth place during its second weekend, losing to Halloween, A Star is Born, Venom and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween. During its second weekend, First Man made about $8.5 million at the box office, meaning it's just under $30 million in total intake domestically.
Worldwide, the flick has fared decently, earning more than $25 million, leading to a worldwide total of $55 million plus.
Still, the movie allegedly cost $59 million to make, and that is before any advertising budget is factored in, so it still has a bit of ground to make up before it starts making money for the studio, especially considering the studios pull in fewer dollars per moviegoer outside of the U.S. On the bright side, it has good awards buzz and that could keep First Man in theaters for a while.
Although the flag-planting isn't allegedly keeping people from First Man, earlier this year social media certainly amplified the flag-planting story. Some users on social seemed to be upset that First Man didn't delve deep into the scene, as it is one of the most iconic moments in America history. Even Buzz Aldrin seemingly commented about the scene, noting,
Ryan Gosling also spoke out about the moment in the movie, noting that the artistic choices made were to speak to the human achievement and not necessarily the American one, saying,
I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that's how we chose to view it.
Perhaps this is why the foreign box office has been pretty high for a more historical-oriented flick. And perhaps not. Either way, there is no official flag-planting scene, but those who have actually seen First Man in theaters should know that the flag is noted in the scenes even if there isn't an official flag-planting scene. Furthermore, Neil Armstrong's sons have spoken out to state they feel the scene works just fine.
As for the movie itself, we are just now on the cusp of awards season. First Man and October newcomer A Star is Born both have buzz. (Although the latter has been more of a crowd pleaser and has made nearly $202 million worldwide.) The Oscars don't air until February 24, 2019, so there are still a lot of opportunities for movies this winter to grab hold on the public consciousness.

DC Isn't As Focused On Its Shared Movie Universe Anymore
Last month, Warner Bros.' DCEU had its biggest success ever with the $1 billion Aquaman. The film, which received generally positive reviews, largely stood apart from the shared universe the studio had been establishing since Man of Steel, and it sounds like Warner is taking a lesson from that. According to Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich, the studio is shying away from the shared universe and focusing on director-driven stories.
We all feel like we've turned a corner now. We're playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it's that it always has to be about the directors.
Ever since Marvel changed the game with the massive success of The Avengers and its Marvel Cinematic Universe, studios have been trying to replicate the format. That includes Warner Bros. and DC, but its DC Extended Universe hit some notable bumps. It all culminated in the release of 2017's Justice League, which only managed to score $657.9 million worldwide.
That's by and large a disappointment, but then Aquaman kicked the door down and became a massive victory for Warner. Thanks to the vision of director James Wan -- who wanted to make a cheesy, earnest, and weird superhero movie -- Aquaman became one of the biggest hits of the year. This hasn't gone unnoticed by Warner Bros.
Toby Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter that they aren't playing by the "Marvel handbook" and that they would be focusing less on the shared universe. They'll just take it one movie at a time and make sure each one is unique and creative.
Now, it's worth noting that Warner has sung this "director-driven" approach song before, and we can ask Zack Snyder, David Ayer, Joss Whedon, and two directors of The Flash how that turned out for them. But there's no question that the best and most successful movies in the DCEU are Wonder Woman and Aquaman, two standalone films that feel separated from the DCEU.
All in all, it sounds like the best lesson to take from Aquaman. Audiences clearly responded to it and part of that success goes to Warner Bros. letting James Wan do his own thing. Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984 look to forge their own paths as well, and I'm very curious to see how those films perform in the near future.
That being said, I don't think Warner should stop trying to make the "shared" part of its universe work, but slow and steady is probably best. No one has been able to figure the cinematic universe out like Marvel, so why not move at your own pace?
