Early Deadpool 2 Concept Art Shows A Very Different Look For Domino
Few could have anticipated the impact that Deadpool 2's Domino would've had on audiences. Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz proved herself as a force to be reckoned with alongside heavy-hitters like Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin, establishing herself as a fan-favorite. Beetz played a significant role in the success of the character, but now it looks like newly-revealed artwork made before the actress was cast aimed for a very different look for the character. Check out the pieces of concept art revealed by artist Alexander Lozano, below!
That's not quite the Domino that we eventually got, is it? Obviously the first thing to note about this concept art is the fact that the Domino teased in the images is a white woman, which makes sense, as Domino is traditionally portrayed as a white character in the pages of Marvel comics. However, beyond that, the heroine's look is also far more tactical and less flamboyant in this art, offering up a heavily armed look that almost feels closer to someone like The Winter Soldier from the MCU than a member of Wade Wilson's X-Force.
One of the other key things worth noting about this concept art is the bigger emphasis on heavy weapons and guns in Domino's outfit. She's armed in the movie, but some of her best moments come when she goes hand-to-hand against her enemies. By contrast, it looks like this version of the character could've been more akin to a support role, using sniper rifles and machine guns.
The evolution of Domino makes quite a bit of sense when we consider just how much Deadpool 2 evolved over the course of its development. This art was conceptualized in the earliest stages of the process, back when original Deadpool director Tim Miller was still involved in the process. However, Miller dropped out before production, and Atomic Blonde's David Leitch eventually stepped in to provide his own unique, creative stamp on this world and the characters who inhabit it.
Of course, in the end, we got Zazie Beetz in the role, and her version of Domino became a widely-praised element of the film. Her afro and darker skin (coupled with a white mark around her eye, rather than a black one) make her distinct from most on-page incarnations of Domino, but her spunky attitude and badass power set (which became far more cinematic than Wade would've anticipated) helped establish her for mainstream audiences. That, along with Beetz's own ability to trade barbs with Ryan Reynolds (who is already no slouch in the smartass one-liner department) made her a standout in a film full of standouts.
Deadpool 2 is now available on Digital HD, with the 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film hitting shelves later this month on August 21.
