Star Wars: Galaxys Edge Features A Ship From Colin Trevorrows Episode IX

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge Features A Ship From Colin Trevorrows Episode IX

Youll recall that before J.J. Abrams returned to the Star Wars franchise to direct The Rise of Skywalker, what was then simply known as Episode IX was going to be helmed by Jurassic Worlds Colin Trevorrow. Due to creative differences with Lucasfilm, Trevorrow departed the final installment of the Skywalker Saga in September 2017, but one element from his version of the Star Wars movie can now be seen at the new Disneyland attraction Star Wars: Galaxys Edge: a ship called the TIE Echelon.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge is now open to the public at Disneyland (if you have a reservation), but needless to say that it takes a long time for that large of an attraction to be constructed. By the time Colin Trevorrow departed Star Wars: Episode IX, Galaxys Edge was nearly a year and a half into the construction process, and even though well never see Trevorrows Episode IX, the TIE Echelon was kept as one of several life-sized ships on display.

As for what specific use the TIE Echelon had during combat, heres what Colin Trevorrow revealed:

It was part of an upgraded First Order fleet. An armed troop transportthe equivalent of a Blackhawk stealth helicopter. We wanted it to evoke memories of earlier ships while still being its own thing. If you look at the elements, its kind of a hybrid of designs from VII and VIII, with some familiar elements from OT Tie Fighters like Vaders Advanced x1. Theres a lot of history in it.

If theres one thing you can count on from The Empire and The First Order, its a lot of variations on the TIE Fighter. Assuming Colin Trevorrows Episode IX also took place a year after The Last Jedi like The Rise of Skywalker does, that would presumably give The First Order enough time to get numerous TIE Echelons into the fight against the Resistance, which has now resorted to guerrilla tactics against the Kylo Ren-led tyrannic force.

Alas, it doesnt sound like the TIE Echelon will appear in J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but because the ship is on display in Galaxys Edge, perhaps thats enough incentive to feature it in a Star Wars TV series, video game or novel down the line. At least The Rise of Skywalker wont be lacking in special TIE starfighters, as the teaser trailer shows Rey leaping over one, which is almost certainly being piloted by Kylo Ren.

Colin Trevorrow also said the following during his interview with Collider about his involvement with Star Wars: Galaxys Edge and the behind-the-scenes story on creating the TIE Echelon:

It was just a natural part of the process. The Imagineering team asked us to develop a new ship for the park while we were designing the film. I took it pretty seriouslyits not every day you get to be a part of something like that. They let me see what they were working on, so I got to see what Galaxys Edge was going to be. I think what theyve created is incredible. Its such an immersive experience.

The director didnt elaborate on provide any details on the sequence where the TIE Echelon would have shown up in Episode IX, but he still loves that ship. As for the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that is being released for the masses, specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but itll result in the ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith reaching its climax.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, and those without a reservation can check out Star Wars: Galaxys Edge starting June 24.

Why Dwayne Johnson Probably Wont Be Back For Fast And Furious 9

Why Dwayne Johnson Probably Wont Be Back For Fast And Furious 9

Although he hasnt been part of the Fast and the Furious franchise since the beginning, ever since he jumped aboard during 2011s Fast Five, Dwayne The Rock Johnsons Luke Hobbs has become an integral character in this fictional universe. So much so that later this year, well see him team up with Deckard Shaw again in the appropriately titled Hobbs and Shaw, the franchises first spinoff. However, because Johnson's still working on Hobbs and Shaw, and because Fast & Furious 9 is gearing up to begin production, its unlikely hell appear in the latter movie. As Johnson put it:

The plan has always been for the Fast and Furious universe to grow and expand. As of now, were not in Fast 9 because theyre getting ready to start shooting. But who knows, with Fast 10 and down the road, you never know. Because Look, at the end of the day, the truth is theres still unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom. Its unfinished.

Dwayne Johnsons comment makes it sound like this rules out Jason Statham from appearing in Fast & Furious 9 as well since hes Johnsons costar on Hobbs and Shaw. But even assuming this holds true, as Johnson acknowledged to MTV, just because Luke Hobbs wont be around for Fast & Furious 9 doesnt mean hes done with the main film series entirely. As long as he and Vin Diesels Dominic Toretto have this unfinished business, those two crossing paths again is bound to happen.

It should be noted that Fast & Furious 10 is intended to be the final film of the main Fast and the Furious film series, so having Luke Hobbs return then seems logical. However, like Johnson mentioned, this universe is growing, and along with Hobbs and Shaw paving a new direction, theres also a female-centric spinoff in the works. So even after the main series wraps up, there will be other opportunities for many of these characters to return, possibly allowing for Luke Hobbs to reunite with either Dominic Toretto or one of his other allies.

We still dont have any details yet about whats in store for Fast & Furious 9, but whatever goes down, Dominic Toretto and his gang/family will have to make due without Luke Hobbs providing extra muscle. Daniel Casey is writing the script, Justin Lin is reportedly lined up to direct and Jordan Brewster will return as Mia Toretto, who was last seen in Furious 7.

As for Hobbs and Shaw, the spinoff will see its eponymous protagonists facing off against Idris Elbas Brixton, an international terrorist leader. The spinoff also stars Vanessa Kirby as Deckard Shaws sister Hattie, Eiza Gonzalez as Madam M, Roman Reigns as Luke Hobbs brother and Eddie Marsan, among others. Deadpool 2s David Leitch directed and longtime Fast and the Furious contributor Chris Morgan wrote the script.

Hobbs and Shaw charges into theaters on August 2, and Fast & Furious 9 will follow on April 10, 2020. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about the franchise, and look through our 2019 release schedule to learn what else is coming out this year.

Disney Needs To Make A New Planet Of The Apes Remake, On One Condition

Disney Needs To Make A New Planet Of The Apes Remake, On One Condition

With all the excitement surrounding Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar of late, its easy to forget that Disneys collection of franchises recently got bigger thanks to the purchase of 21st Century Fox. Among the studios new acquisitions is the Planet of the Apes film series, and during CinemaCon last month, it was one of the Fox franchises that Disney indicated would continue on post-regime change, although there doesnt appear to be anything in active development right now.

Its been over 50 years since the first Planet of the Apes movie was released, and thanks to the reboot trilogy than ran from 2011 to 2017, the franchise has had new life breathed into it. Im game for Disney delivering a new Planet of the Apes movie and would especially be interested in a remake of the original, but on one condition: it needs to be set in the same continuity as the reboot movies.

Most of you are probably saying right now that weve been down this remake road before, and it did not go well. Thats true. In 2001, after over a decade in development hell, Fox finally released a Planet of the Apes remake, which Tim Burton directed and starred folks like Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter and Paul Giamatti. It ended on quite the cliffhanger, and it was abundantly clear that just like the original did, Fox intended for this new Planet of the Apes to spawn sequels.

This Planet of the Apes proved to be a financial success, making over $362 million off a $100 million budget, but it was met with mixed-negative critical reception. Tim Burton declared hed rather jump out a window then work on a sequel, and Fox eventually just shut down plans to continue this iteration of the franchise, paving the way for what would become Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Disney is certainly within its rights to press the reset button start on the entire Planet of the Apes franchise again, but that would be a mistake. The mythology crafted by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes is too rich to toss aside, and it actually makes a more direct Planet of the Apes remake sound a lot more interesting than starting from scratch.

Fox was wise to move away from the traditional Apes canon and instead use the most recent Planet of the Apes trilogy to look back on how Earths apes became super-intelligent and how humanity was almost wiped out and how the survivors started losing their intelligence. It was an interesting and more realistic look at how an ape uprising would occur.

Now that the groundwork has been laid, and Caesars story has ended, were free to jump forward several centuries to see how ape society has evolved since Caesar led his followers to their promised land. Naturally itll look a lot like what was shown in the original Planet of the Apes movie, but naturally theres also room to take some creative liberties in order to stand out from whats come before.

If youre not interested in retreading original Planet of the Apes territory, thats fine, because Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes work perfectly fine on their own. Theres never a guarantee that origin stories do well, but both critically and commercially, these movies all succeeded, and Id argue that this Apes trilogy is one of the best movie trilogies of all time.

Of course, theres also the possibility that Disney would rather have the next Planet of the Apes movie have closer ties to War for the Planet of the Apes, perhaps by following Caesars son, Cornelius, as an adult. That would be fine, but in terms in terms of setting and aesthetics, weve gotten three movies worth of apes running around on a normal Earth. Wouldnt it be more interesting to instead see how theyre descendants are doing in a civilization that somewhat resembles what humans once lived in?

Think about it: were arguably more invested in the apes than ever now that we know their background. We watched over three movies as they rose from common animals to simians with human-level intelligence, and now humans are on their way to becoming as primitive as the apes once were. Now that their origin story is out of the way, we can finally move forward and see how the fruits of Caesars labor led to the apes flourishing on this new Earth centuries later.

Naturally this paves the way for the original Planet of the Apes story to unfold, albeit with some adjustments to ensure it fits within this reboot continuity properly, such as the newest Cornelius (i.e. the one that Roddy Mcdowell played) being a direct descendant of Caesar. And naturally if Disney delivers a Planet of the Apes remake, that doesnt have to mark the end of this iteration of the franchise. With all the money that Disney paid for Fox, you can be sure the companys not going to bring Planet of the Apes back to the big screen for a one-and-done tale.

The key difference, though, for any sequels to follow Disneys Planet of the Apes remake is that outside of George Taylor coming to the future (Rise of the Planet of the Apes has a news report of the Icarus leaving Earth, and a later newspaper headline reveals the ship was lost), time travel would be incorporated. In the original Planet of the Apes film series, Zira and Cornelius were transported in time to the contemporary United States, and their son, Caesar, ended up the catalyst for the future his parents came from. It was a cyclical timeline!

That doesnt need to happen in this version of the franchise. The apes became smart through exposure to a viral-based drug, so theres no reason to go back to this period. Instead, we can focus on more on fleshing out this strange society even more so than the original Planet of the Apes movies did. Rather than eventually nuke the world, which is what happened in Beneath the Planet of the Apes, we can explore a different kind of aftermath from George Taylors presence, one that perhaps leads to human and ape relations improving and, over time, Earth returning to something more familiar.

Since Fox will now only be making five to six movies per year under the Disney banner, it remains to be seen when the studio will decide to tackle Planet of the Apes. Whenever that time comes, the studio would be better served piggybacking on what Fox delivered earlier this decade and presenting a Planet of the Apes remake through that lens as opposed to beginning completely anew.

Let us know what youd like to see next from the Planet of the Apes franchise in the comments below. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for any updates on what Disney has in store for the Planet of the Apes, and for now, you can learn what movies are hitting theaters later this year in our 2019 release schedule.

See Milla Jovovich And A Giant Sword In First Monster Hunter Image

Monster Hunter isn't a video game series that's well known to the general public around here, but the first image makes the film adaptations influences quite clear. The first official look at the Monster Hunter movie is here and it includes two things you'd expect to see in any movie based on a video game, Milla Jovovich, and a big ass sword. Check it out.

The image is a pretty simple one in the grand scheme of things. It's Milla Jovovich, a veteran of the Resident Evil film franchise, and martial arts expert Tony Jaa running across the desert, or possibly a beach. The image wouldn't even be all that noteworthy except for the fact that Tony Jaa is carrying a sword as big as his head. If you had never heard of Monster Hunter before, you'd likely be able to tell that the new movie was based on a video game based on that alone.

While the Monster Hunter video game series is fairly popular in its native Japan and has no shortage of fans in the west, it's not exactly a mainstream game title. While your average filmgoer has likely heard of names like Mario, Zelda, or even the previous Milla Jovovich-led Resident Evil series, unless you play games, you may not know Monster Hunter at all.

At its core, the Monster Hunter game series is exactly what it says on the tin. A game in which players take the role of a character who is a professional hunter of monsters. These monsters can be killed or trapped. The games take place in a fantasy world where humans are regularly threatened by various creatures, and the player's job is to stop the monsters from doing damage.

Most of the games in the series have little more plot than that, though the most recent game in the franchise Monster Hunter: World has a bit more going on in the story department.

The movie will reportedly take a slightly different approach the basic material, as it will see characters from our modern world fall through a portal to an alternate dimension which appears to resemble the Monster Hunter world I just described. The modern humans will then have to become monster hunters in order to prevent the creatures from traveling back through the portal and attacking Earth.

Monster Hunter is being directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who spent the last several years bringing us the aforementioned Resident Evil movies alongside his wife Milla Jovovich. Those movies also took some significant liberties with the source material but frequently brought us some entertaining action movies if nothing else.

The Monster Hunter movie is currently without a release date but as one expects the film will require some significant post-production time in order to create all the various monsters that need to be hunted, don't expect to see this one before early 2020.
