Jude Laws Dumbledore Is Fighting Inner Demons During Crimes Of Grindelwald
Since J.K. Rowling's iconic novels first hit bookshelves in the 1990's, Harry Potter has continued to be at the forefront of pop culture, continually releasing new content and expanding the Wizarding World. In addition to the Cursed Child plays and the various theme parks currently going strong, Harry Potter's magical universe is growing with the prequel series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is nearly upon us, which will include some great connections to the Harry Potter franchise. Chief among them is the introduction of a younger Albus Dumbledore, played by Jude Law. Law has been teasing a very different Dumbledore than the one we know and love, and now he's given more context-- revealing Albus will have some personal issues to grapple with in the upcoming blockbuster.
When you have the opportunity to work with the creator of a character, and a novelist at that, it's like having a well of inspiration and detail. She was very generous with her time and she gave me a very clear picture of who he was from childhood; his motivations and the pivotal moments from his life and the scars that were left. So she and David Yates gave me a real sense early on so we could redefine that period before Dumbledore became the man we know and love from the Potter movies. I was able to dig into the demons and the turmoil and the drama of a younger man and the stuff that he has yet to resolve.
Well, this is certainly intriguing. Jude Law was able to get some detailed information about Dumbledore from J.K Rowling herself, and infuse the beloved character's backstory into his performance for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. That's worth the price of admission for most fans, and it should be fascinating to see how it all comes together in the final cut.
Hardcore Harry Potter fans can at least figure the broad strokes of what Jude Law is talking about here. While Albus grew up as a happy young Wizard, tragedy struck his family due to hatred and tension between the Wizarding and Muggle worlds. His sister Ariana was brutally attacked by a group of muggle boys, and was left mentally and emotionally damaged from her trauma. This may be one of the issues Dumbledore is struggling with, especially as he attempts to stop Grindelwald from starting an all out war with non-magical folks.
Grindelwald himself is likely a large reason for Dumbledore's strife, if J.K. Rowling's earlier comments about their relationship are to be believed. When Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was actually a gay man, she explained that he harbored romantic feelings for the villain. This may make the upcoming battle between the two all the more dynamic, if Johnny Depp and Jude Law play that dynamic in their upcoming performances. Fans are eager to see how young Dumbledore will act, especially regarding his sexuality.
Jude Law's casting as Dumbledore helped build early anticipation for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, before any footage or concrete information was available to the general public. Law as a youthful energy that we've never seen from Dumbledore, and the generations of fans are looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out.
In his same conversation with the Toronto Sun, Jude Law further explained how different his character will be in Crimes of Grindelwald. As he explained,
I guess one of the things that makes him different is he's 45 and not 112. The calm and sense of self that the old Dumbledore has is yet to be achieved. He's a man still going through and figuring out his path. Also, he's still living with demons that are unresolved. There are still issues that he carries that he needs to confront and work through
Age brings a certain amount of wisdom, especially in the Wizarding World. While muggles are expected to be adults by the age of 45, things operate a bit differently when magic is involved. Witches and Wizards can live much longer, allowing for even more life experience. Dumbledore lived until the ripe age of 112, and had more life in him before being murdered by Snap in The Half-Blood Prince.
Dumbledore may be the most significant connection The Crimes of Grindelwald has with the proper Harry Potter franchise, there will be a few other iconic figures making their way to the upcoming sequel. When the trailers began arriving, it revealed actress Claudia Kim was playing the human version of Nagini. Nagini ended up being Voldermort's loyal murderous snake and horocrux, and the Fantastic Beasts franchise will help bridge this gap.
Most recently, it broke that a younger version of Professor Minerva McGonagall will also appear in The Crimes of Grindelwald, although the size of her role is a mystery. While the timeline of the sequel has the potential to break the canon and timeline of the franchise, Potterheads are eager to see the beloved transfiguration professor at a younger age.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will also feature the first live-action appearance of Nicolas Flamel. Flamel created the Sorcerer's Stone, aka how the entire Harry Potter franchise began. It is able to grant never-ending life, and may just come into play for the main narrative of the upcoming sequel. Johnny Depp's villainous Grindelwald is preparing for a war, so he may be trying to amass as much magical power as possible-- including a way to cheat death itself.
The pressure is definitely on to for director David Yates to deliver another Harry Potter movie that will be both a critical and box office success. The Crimes of Grindelwald is supposed to be the second in a total of five movies, should the Wizarding World continue to be such a popular place for new media.

Years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought serialized storytelling to the mainstream, the superhero genre was in its relative humble beginnings with Bryan Singer's X-Men. That franchise is still going strong, with the upcoming Dark Phoenix continuing the main narrative, while spinoffs like Deadpool and The New Mutants help flesh out the expanded universe.
The X-Men franchise recently lost its main star, as Hugh Jackman retired from playing Wolverine with James Mangold's Logan. But Disney's upcoming merger with 20th Century Fox has many hoping Wolverine would be recast, and finally brought into the MCU. Keanu Reeves recently revealed that he's got a passing interest in playing Wolverine, and now an artist has rendered Reeves as the character, check it out:
Is anyone else nerding out right now? This image shows what Keanu Reeves might look like as Wolverine in the MCU, and it's pretty epic. Of course, the odds of him wearing Logan's claws is pretty thin.
The above image was rendered by artist Boss Logic. Whenever superhero news or casting rumors begin making the rounds of the internet, Boss Logic usually ends up crafting his own version of that character. It's a way for the fandom to imagine actors taking on iconic superhero roles, especially since most of the casting choices never come to fruition.
Still, seeing Neo dressed up like Wolverine is the crossover that geek culture didn't expect. And Keanu certainly looks badass in the role. The version pictured shows Logan after a battle, with fresh wounds slowly healing. The slashes on his forehead allow his adamantium skull exposed, which is an especially cool detail to include in the rendering.
While Keanu Reeves might not be the first actor that comic book fans would associate with the fan favorite X-Men, his prior action experience surely gives the actor the experience to wield Logan's slaws. The version pictured is a bit older and more experienced, similar to Reeves' appearance in the John Wick franchise. Reeves gets in great shape and goes through intense training to play the hitman/dog lover, and that same bloodlust could easily be applied to Wolverine's rage.
Of course, John Wick isn't the only time Keanu Reeves has become an iconic action star. He's perhaps best known for his role as Neo in The Matrix trilogy, where Reeves performed some of the most iconic action sequences in recent history. The use of wire work and slow motion has become commonplace in the years since, and Reeves' experience in The Matrix would likely inform a hypothetical performance as Wolverine.
It should be fascinating to see what happens to the current X-Men franchise once the deal with Disney is finalized. While moviegoers are eager to see the mutants enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's a logistical nightmare. Will the same timeline and actors be transferred into the property? Or will Disney recast and bring new adaptations of the team to the massive universe? Only time will tell.

7 Actors Who Have Played The Joker In Their Own Unique Way
Its rare that a super villain can achieve anywhere near the same amount of popularity that the hero they frequently battle, but The Joker is definitely at that level. Debuting in 1940s Batman #1 (the same issue where Catwoman first appeared), the Clown Prince of Crime has long been cemented as the Caped Crusaders arch-nemesis, so naturally hes also been adapted in other media numerous times. In fact, weve reached a point where The Joker is now the star of his own movie, and he wont even be fighting Batman!
As one can logically assume from this kind of prominence, The Joker isnt a simple role. With so many years of history, there are various ways one can play this character, so with that in mind, weve decided to look at the actors whove bring this cackling fiend to life on the silver screen. Just to be clear, this feature is only discussing theatrical portrayals of Joker, although I do recommend checking out Cameron Monaghans performances as Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska on the Fox series Gotham, as those twins cover the Joker spectrum excellently.
Cesar Romero's Joker in Batman (The 1966 Movie)Although Batman made his first live action appearance in a 1943 film serial, itd be another 23 years before The Joker got to follow suit in the live action Batman TV series. Cesar Romero, who had an extensive movie and TV resume and was arguably known best beforehand as The Cisco Kid in six Westerns released between 1939 and 1941, was cast as the Clown Prince of Crime, and for the most part, he nailed the character quite well. Modeled off how Joker was portrayed in the Silver Age of Comics, when superhero stories were more kid-friendly, Romeros Joker was more of a goofy prankster than a psychopathic murderer, which fit with the TV series tone nicely. Romero also refused to shave off his mustache when playing The Joker, requiring the white makeup be applied over the facial hair.
Two months after the Batman Season 1 finale aired, these versions of the characters made the jump to the big screen in the first ever full-length theatrical Batman movie, simply and appropriately titled Batman. Cesar Romeros Joker teamed up with Frank Gorshins Riddler, Lee Meriwethers Catwoman and Burgess Merediths Penguin teaming up to cause all kinds of trouble, with this clip demonstrating their dynamic together and Romeros overall Joker personality.
Naturally, Romeros Joker in the Batman movie didnt differ in any way from how he played the character on the Batman TV series, and the movie was critically well-received and performed decently commercially. In the grand scheme of things, while Romeros Joker is definitely not nearly as frightening as later versions of Joker, he still has a sizable amount of fans all these years later.
Jack Nicholson's Joker in Batman (The 1989 Movie)As popular as the 1960s Batman TV series was and still is, theres no question that its campy and kooky, basically meaning you can show it to fans of all ages. The 1989 Batman movie, on the other hand, isnt something you necessarily want to show to the kids. It marked the Caped Crusaders first on-screen entry into adult territory, and Jack Nicholson was hired to play The Joker in this tale. Nicholson was unquestionably the biggest actor in this movie thanks to his performances in Chinatown and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, and he beat out actors like Brad Dourif, Tim Curry, John Lithgow and James Woods for the role.
Jack Nicholson had many memorable moments as The Joker in Batman, but arguably the weirdest one was when he and his goons defaced the paintings inside a museum while dancing to Prince music.
There were two chief differences with Jack Nicholsons iteration of The Joker compared to how hes depicted in the comics: one, we knew his real name (Jack Napier), and two, he was the one who murdered Bruce Waynes parents as opposed to the traditional culprit, Joe Chill. Beyond that, though, Nicholsons Joker was a relatively faithful adaptation of the super villain, from gaining his clownish visage after falling into a vat of chemicals to preferring to kill people artistically and with dramatic flair. We were only treated to one appearance from this Joker, although had the movie Batman Unchained moved forward, the plan was for Nicholsons Joker to appear when Batman hallucinated him after being dosed with Scaercrows fear gas. In any case, for nearly two decades, its safe to say that Nicholsons Joker was the definitive live action Joker, and even now, hes still fondly remembered by many for portraying the character not as a pest, but as the psychopathic murderer he is at his core.
Mark Hamill Voice Acting Joker in Batman: Mask Of The PhantasmObviously everyone has their favorite version of The Joker, but its not exaggerating to say that most Batman fans label Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, as the definitive voice of the Clown Prince of Crime. Hamill has voiced across Joker across numerous projects for nearly 30 years, but hes chiefly known for playing the character within the DC Animated Universe, specifically Batman: The Animated Series. A year after that TV show debuted, it jumped to the big screen with Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm, which didnt fare well commercially during its theatrical run, but was met with critical acclaim and has had a wonderful home video life.
Serving as the secondary antagonist in Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm, Mark Hamills Joker was largely the same as it was on television. He could be wacky and absurd one minute, but then turn on a dime and become incredibly horrifying the next minute. This was highlighted nicely when Joker first shows up to meet Salvatore Valestra, his boss from his pre-clown days.
However, because the movie wasnt subject to the same censorship rules Batman: The Animated Series had to follow airing on Fox Kids, that allowed more wiggle room with making Joker more adult. Even under a PG rating, Mask of the Phantasm got away with Joker much more adult, such as him actually killing people and making sexual innuendos. While Ill argue that the direct-to-video Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker gave us the darkest version of Mark Hamills Joker in the DCAU, Mask of the Phantasm is nonetheless a great example of how Batmans arch-nemesis can tread a fine line between funny and terrifying.
Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark KnightAfter being teased at the end of Batman Begins, The Joker surfaced several years later as the main antagonist in The Dark Knight, played by Heath Ledger. I dont need to remind any of you that Ledgers take on The Joker was acclaimed and netted the actor a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. That said, it is worth remembering that in the lead-up to The Dark Knights release, there was skepticism about Christopher Nolans version of the Clown Prince of Crime. Along with Ledgers previous acting work causing concern that he could properly pull off a villain like this, this version of The Joker is quite different from how he is usually depicted, particularly his physical appearance (wearing makeup, dying his hair green and having a Glasgow smile carved into his face) and use of traditional weapons rather than dangerous gag items.
Nevertheless, this Joker was incredibly dangerous, as shown in the scene when he killed Gambol (whod put a bounty on Jokers head) and basically turned the phrase Why so serious? into one of the most unsettling lines in movie history.
Ultimately, though, the spirit of the original Joker was alive in Heath Ledgers Joker. He thrived off chaos, and rather than wanting to be just another powerful, money-obsessed crime boss in Gotham City, he aimed to spread anarchy and give the people a better class of criminal. Ledgers Joker was definitely a more politically-skewed version of the character, but he went all out with giving audiences something incredibly different from what had come before, which included locking himself in a hotel room for six weeks to figure out his Jokers voice, movements and mannerisms. The result was that Ledgers Joker is not only widely considered to be the best live action interpretation of the cackling madman, but also one of the best movie villains overall.
Jared Leto's Joker in Suicide SquadEight years after we watched Heath Ledgers Joker nearly bring Gotham City to its knees, Jared Leto put his own spin on the character in Suicide Squad, the first movie not to have Batman and Joker directly fighting one another. Although Letos Joker saw the return of some of Jokers traditional physical traits, like naturally chalk-white skin and green hair, like Ledger, he also had some drastic differences, like tattoos covering his whole body and bejeweled teeth. Because Suicide Squad featured his main squeeze, Harley Quinn, in her first live action film appearance, his role in the movie revolved around his relationship with her: how he manipulated Harleen Qunizel when she was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, how he became depressed after she was imprisoned and his efforts to free her from Task Force X.
Like his comic book counterpart, Jared Letos Joker was also a powerful figure in Gotham City, as show in this clip where he kills another crime boss simply for making a lustful comment about Harley Quinn.
Although Suicide Squad was a commercial hit, it was thrashed critically, and Jared Letos Joker performance was among the more negatively received elements. For starters, Joker didnt get that much screen time in the movie, so that meant for some people, there wasnt enough scenes to properly judge this version of the character. Others were just dissatisfied with this Jokers physical appearance and/or his weird mannerisms, or just the fact that he came across as a standard, if eccentric, gangster rather than the colorful super villain we know best. It also didnt help that Letos refusal to break character during principal photography led to him doing some crazy things, including sending bizarre gifts like a briefcase full of bullets, a live rat and used condoms. So Jared Letos Joker performance certainly isnt one of the more popular ones, but he may have an opportunity leave a better impression in the future. Assuming he doesnt become too busy with playing Morbius the Living Vampire or DCEU plans dont change further, that is.
Zach Galifianakis Voice Acting Joker in The Lego Batman MovieThe Lego Batman Movie is a humorous celebration of Batmans decades-long history, so naturally The Joker would be involved in the festivities. This movie portrays Batman and Jokers feud through a romantic-like lens, so when the former tells the latter that he doesnt mean anything special to him, Joker is hurt. But that just leads Joker to crafting his most ambitious plan yet: surrendering both himself and the rest of Gotham Citys super villains into police custody, and then tricking Batman into sending him into the Phantom Zone when the Caped Crusader suspects hes up to something. The result: Joker allying himself with villains from other areas of pop culture, escaping the Phantom Zone and attempting to destroy Gotham City. Eventually Batman, having realized hed been selfish to everyone in his life, makes up with The Joker, and the two work together to save the city and send the other villains back to the Phantom Zone before resuming their usual rivalry.
The scene when Joker surrenders himself to the GCPD is a good demonstration of how Zach Galifianakis Joker has a more playful edge, but still acts incredibly suspicious.
While theres nothing wrong with Zach Galifianakis Joker performance, theres also nothing particularly exceptional about it either. It simply sounds like Galifianakis as you hear him in movies like The Hangover and Keeping Up with the Joneses. The actor is amusing enough in the role and is given some good lines, but ultimately, theres nothing particularly memorable about it. Which is fine, as Galifianakis does a satisfiable job with what hes given, and fans of the actor will likely appreciate what he did. If The Lego Batman Movie 2 does move forward, the filmmakers might as well bring him back for it.
Joaquin Phoenix's Joker In The Upcoming MovieAdmittedly, we cant comment too much yet on whats in store for Joker since the movie is months away from being released. That said, from whats been revealed from this movie so far, both officially and unofficially, this is going to be a significantly different depiction of the Clown Prince of Crime. For one thing, Joker is telling the eponymous characters origin story without Batmans involvement. Bruce Wayne will be in the movie, but as a child and with both of his parents still around. Then theres the fact that like Heath Ledgers Joker, Joaquin Phoenixs Joker is wearing clown makeup instead of falling into a vat of chemicals. However, the leaked set photos and videos show Phoenixs Joker leading a crime wave across Gotham City, so clearly this incarnation of the character is just as talented in igniting chaos as his predecessors.
Although Joaquin Phoenix had expressed interest in starring in a comic book movie as early as 2014, he was more interested in doing a character study-kind of movie, hence why he declined to play Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Joker doesnt take place within the DCEU and isnt adhering closely to the comics source material, this allowed Phoenix more freedom with putting his own stamp on the main character, who in this continuity is Arthur Fleck, a failed stand-up comedian who is driven insane and turns to crime after being disregarded by society. Well have to wait for a trailer to get our first taste of Phoenixs Joker performance, but at the very least, this movie will be an interesting experiment that could shake up the comic book movie genre, as well as satisfy Phoenixs desire to contribute to the genre without being locked in for numerous sequels.
