The Hardest Scene Ant-Man Director Peyton Reed Ever Shot

In his time as a director, Peyton Reed has gone from helming TV documentaries and episodes of the Back to the Future animated series, to feature films like the teen classic Bring It On. In 2015, Peyton Reed made the jump to directing big budget superhero fare with Ant-Man, and now this weekend's Ant-Man and The Wasp. The latest MCU film is a blast, with great action set pieces that probably weren't easy to shoot. However, the most challenging scene Peyton Reed ever shot isn't in Ant-Man and the Wasp or its predecessor. The most difficult was actually the dinner scene in the 2006 comedy The Break-Up, as he explained:

One of the hardest things I ever had to shoot was in The Break-Up, the dinner table scene. It's a scene in The Break-Up where Jennifer Aniston's family is meeting Vince Vaughn's family for the first time, and it's a lot of characters and a lot of actors, and structurally it's a really long scene at this point in the movie. Servicing all these characters, I think, it took like three days to shoot this one dinner table scene.

This may not be the scene you would expect, but it is certainly a memorable one. The dinner scene is one of the most awkward and funny scenes in The Break-Up, as Vince Vaughn's Gary is squirming in his seat while John Michael Higgins' Richard sings in his face. A great scene to be sure, but its just a dinner scene with very little camera movement, how could this rom-com be more challenging than fight scenes and the Quantum Realm? Just watching the scene it might be hard to see what made it so difficult, but Peyton Reed further explained,

That's a weird thing, because it's not a car chase or something really technically complicated, but by the time you're on day three of a dinner table scene that's comedic, keeping everybody's energy fresh and in the moment --- because they've done the scene over and over, because you have to shoot it for each character --- that was one of the big ones.

There are nine characters sitting around a dinner table in the scene, which lasts for several minutes. As Peyton Reed elaborated to Syfy Wire, the sheer amount of coverage needed for the scene is part of what made it such a challenge. Every character needs to have their moments and be represented, which requires each of them to be shot from like 4 or 5 different angles in what is a fairly long scene. That means moving the cameras and changing lighting to make sure everyone looks their best... which takes a ton of time. Also, one of the primary jobs of a director is to get necessary performances out of the actors. As Peyton Reed recalled, after the third day of filming the same comedic scene, some of that spontaneity and energy gets zapped. So maintaining the sense of urgency and keeping the performances where they need to be is another major challenge.

Watching this after hearing Peyton Reed's explanation, you can begin to see how much this must have taken. There are single shots, two-shots, wide shots and over the shoulders. And with the dinner table setup, even the actors just on the edge of the frame or out of focus are still performing, so there's a lot to cover. This goes to show how even scenes that seem simple and aren't visually impressive can still be extremely difficult to film.

Check Out Tom Hardy Playing Al Capone In New Movie

Tom Hardy has handily turned into one of Hollywood's most versatile and transformative performers over the course of his career. He regularly plays larger-than-life characters, and now he has set his sights on one of America's most notorious gangsters with his new role as Al Capone in Josh Trank's Fonzo. All eyes are on Hardy to do something special with the legendary persona, and we now have our first official look at the Venom actor as the famous gangster. Check out the cool image, below.

Fonzo (based on Al Capone's real first name, Alphonse) will follow the titular gangster during the final year of his life. Offering up an Al Capone suffering from severe dementia, we will see the aging criminal come face to face with the memories of the horrific actions that he sanctioned during his reign as Chicago's most notorious mob boss. That premise alone promises something dark, and this smoky, black and white photo hammers home how Josh Trank is attempting to tap into Tom Hardy's knack for dark characters.

One thing is very clear from this photo: Tom Hardy looks like he's going to play a very different Al Capone compared to the versions seen in other movies. The prohibition-era mob boss has become a pop culture fixture in the years since his death, with actors like Robert De Niro, Eric Roberts, and even The Punisher's Jon Bernthal playing him in a wide variety of projects.

You can even check our De Niro's iconic (and delightfully campy) portrayal of the mobster in The Untouchables, below.

Most of those preceding projects portrayed Al Capone as a quintessential, pinstripe suit-wearing mobster based on the legend of the character. However, the photo of Tom Hardy in Fonzo seems to promise something grittier. Needless to say, we're very excited.

The prospect of Tom Hardy stepping in to play the role of Al Capone for Josh Trank's Fonzo is particularly intriguing when we consider the fact that he has a history of portraying silver screen gangsters. In addition to this upcoming role, the Inception actor has also made a name for himself with his characters in similar period crime dramas like Legend and Peaky Blinders, not to mention one of his most iconic roles as a similarly notorious British gangster Charles Bronson in Nicolas Winding Refn's Bronson. In addition to Hardy, the Fantastic Four director has also enlisted the acting chops of Matt Dillon, Linda Cardellini, and Twin Peaks' star Kyle McLachlan.

What A Quiet Place 2 Could Be About, According To John Krasinski

John Krasinski has had years to make a name for himself as an actor, but his directorial career kicked off with a bang last month. A Quiet Place not only walked away with critical acclaim, it also made over $256 million worldwide, an impressive haul for a horror movie that only cost between $17 million to $21 million to make. With a performance like that, it's no wonder that Paramount Pictures officially gave the green light to A Quiet Place 2, and while Krasinski hasn't revealed if he'll be back to direct the sequel, he has thought it would be interesting if the next movie followed a new group of survivors. Krasinski explained:

The thing that I loved in the movie, where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive? In the extreme these characters are going through, there's no room to think about that. They're there, there's an old man who's about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what's going on elsewhere at this same time.

Although A Quiet Place was originally conceived as a standalone story, writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods revealed after the movie's release that they'd already written some set pieces for a sequel and mentioned that there are "multiple universes" the next installment could be set in. As things stand now, although Paramount president mentioned at CinemaCon that he believed in the collaboration between John Krasinski and Emily Blunt on A Quiet Place, it hasn't actually been confirmed if either of them will work on A Quiet Place 2. However, if Krasinski signs a deal to direct the sequel, perhaps that bodes well for A Quiet Place 2 being a separate start rather than a direct follow-up to its predecessor.

Although the door is still open for John Krasinski to direct A Quiet Place 2, his character, Lee Abbot, was killed in A Quiet Place by the monstrous, sound sensitive creatures that had wiped out of most of Earth's population. Thanks to his sacrifice, his family, including a newborn child, managed to escape, and Lee's daughter, Regan, later discovered that when used with a microphone, the cochlear implant her father repaired for her was capable of weakening these creatures. That potentially sets the stage for the rest of the Abbot family to start slowly killing off these creatures in A Quiet Place 2, but if the sequel decides to follow other survivors like Krasinski suggested to Deadline, then either that plot thread won't be followed up, or maybe the Abbots would only play a minor role in A Quiet Place 2, which still allows for a connective thread between both movies.

Marvel Boss 'Heartbroken' About Black Panther's Oscar Loss

A decade after the injustice of The Dark Knights Best Picture snub, a superhero movie was finally nominated for the Academy Awards highest honor. That film was Marvel Studios Black Panther, a box office behemoth and cultural phenomenon that went on to collect three golden statues, but missed out on Best Picture. That was a disappointment to many, including Avi Arad, the former Marvel Studios CEO and Chairman and longtime Marvel producer. Speaking about Black Panthers Oscar loss, Avi Arad said:

I was heartbroken that Black Panther didnt get the Academy. It could have, but you know, [the voters] they always looked at superheroes like it was a Yabba dabba doo kind of a thing versus something that mattered or something that was going to last.

Despite no longer being with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad was still rooting for Black Panther to get the win for Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards, so much so that he was heartbroken when the statue went to Green Book instead. Avi Arad clearly believed that Black Panther was deserving of the award, but as he told Deadline, he thinks that Academy voters still look at superheroes as some Fred Flintstone silliness that is beneath more traditional Oscar films.

That Academy bias against from superhero movies is well established, but the tide has slowly begun to turn, especially after The Dark Knight, with movies like Logan earning an Oscar nomination and Black Panthers 7 nominations. Nevertheless, Avi Arad still seems to believe that some voters feel that superhero movies dont matter and wont stand the test of time.

You can certainly understand Avi Arads investment in comic book movies and desire to see them not only succeed, but also be recognized as art with value that is deserving of the kind of recognition that films considered more highbrow receive. Avi Arad has been working on Marvel projects for decades and believes in the brand.

Avi Arad was an executive producer on the beloved 90s X-Men animated series, and the 2000 X-Men film that began the comic book movie age. Hes had his hands in the genres highs like Spider-Man 2 and its lows like Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It must mean a lot to him to see the genre come so far, and it makes sense that he would want it to finally attain the respect and legitimacy that a Best Picture win rightfully or wrongly confers.

Alas, Black Panther did not win Best Picture, but it did win three other Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Production Design. Avi Arad wanted it to win more, but Best Picture was always a long shot and it is certainly a trend in the right direction. And he is far from the only one who is disappointed with how Best Picture turned out.

The night wasnt a total loss though, far from it. Through his Avi Arad Productions, Avi Arad was a producer on Sonys Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
