Ghostbusters Director Paul Feig Wanted To Take The Reboot Out Of The Country For A Sequel
Two years ago, Sony tried to reboot the Ghostbusters franchise with what happened to be an all-female cast-- planning to release more sequels afterward. Things didn't go in that direction, as not only did the movie underperform and receive middling reviews, but it was hounded by internet trolls almost from Day One. Ultimately, despite a post-credits scene teasing a sequel, it seems the franchise is on stasis. Even though a sequel seems unlikely at this point, it sounds like it would have been pretty interesting, as director Paul Feig says it would have taken the Ghostbusters to Asia.
I definitely wanted us to go to another country. Because when we were doing the press tour, the international press tour, every country the reporters would come with these drawings or artist renderings of that country's ghosts. And every country has these really wild ghost stories and ghost characters that they scare kids with or keep people in line with. I really loved the idea of the Ghostbusters going to like Asia. Yeah, so there's a lot of fun stuff what we could have done.
Every Ghostbusters film has been set in New York City, which has a lot of ghosts to keep the team busy. But it's a big planet, and lots of countries have their own takes on ghost stories that feature unique and spooky creatures. That's part of the reason why Ghostbusters 2 would have taken the team out of the Big Apple to have an adventure overseas.
Director Paul Feig appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, wherein he dished on what he wanted to do with Ghostbusters 2. During the press tour, Feig received all kinds of drawings and stories from other countries about their mythology and ghost stories. America may have cursed dolls and evil nuns, it isn't the only source of spooky tales in the world, and Ghostbusters 2 could have featured a trip to Asia.
It's definitely a cool idea and a fresh perspective that hasn't been seen in the franchise. Ivan Reitman voiced the same opinion of taking the sequel to Asia one year ago. Interestingly, Ghostbusters was banned in China due to obscure censorship guidelines involving the occult, so that might have been a hurdle the proposed sequel would have had to face. However, from a business perspective, China is the biggest foreign market and American studios have made attempts to appeal to that market with partnerships for films like Iron Man 3 and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
It's unclear if a sequel to Ghostbusters will happen one day but it seems unlikely. Sony is trying to nail down plans for the franchise with a variety of projects but nothing concrete has happened just yet. It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Ghostbusters 2 might be a go after all is said and done with the home video numbers. Feig did set up a sequel in a post-credits sequence, which foretold the return of Zuul, the primary antagonist from the first film in the 80s.

At last night's 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, actor Jeff Bridges received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his many and impactful contributions to the world of entertainment. In his speech, Jeff Bridges, ever the beacon of positivity and hopefulness, got philosophical-- inspiring and a little confounding as he talked about trim tabs. As he explained, trim tabs are small mechanisms found on ships and aircraft that help to stabilize them. Jeff Bridges cited 20th century inventor and futurist Buckminster Fuller who used trim tabs as a metaphor to show how like a small trim tab can help turn the rudder on a large ship, an individual can help to change society.

The Predator Box Office: The Trophy-Hunting Alien Wins The Weekend
It's been nearly a decade since the dreadlocks-sporting aliens known as the Predators have been on the big screen, and this weekend they returned with a modest box office take. Early estimates suggest Shane Black's The Predator may not be a record for the franchise, but at the very least they are in the number one position on the Top 10. It's still possible that The Predator could set an opening weekend high for the brand, as these numbers are unadjusted estimates, but right now it looks like the new movie is going to have to settle for second place behind Nimrod Antal's Predators from 2010, which pulled in $24.8 million in its first three days. It should be noted that this doesn't include the xenomorph crossovers, as Alien vs. Predator made $38.3 million back in 2004. All together it's not great when you consider that the estimates suggested that the new film would make between $25 and $50 million - which is a pretty big range to fall out of.
Given that Predator should be a standout brand for Fox, this performance probably won't elate the filmmakers or the studio. The movie was pushed around the release schedule (it was originally supposed to be released in February), and underwent heavy reshoots - neither of which helped in terms of buzz. It got a showy premiere with a midnight debut earlier this month at the Toronto Film Festival, but reviews haven't been overly kind, and, according to CinemaScore the audience response has been tepid (its received a "C+" grade). It will likely find its own cult audience in the years ahead, but ultimately it's reported $88 million budget before marketing is going to look high compared to what it makes domestically.
Taking some attention away from The Predator this weekend were three other new releases - though they were also kind of all over the map in terms of reception and box office takes. Paul Feig's A Simple Favor was definitely the film with the best reviews to hit theaters this weekend, and managed to hit eight figures and nab third place. Meanwhile, Yann Demange's White Boy Rick is on a path to make back its $29 million budget, after a fourth place start. As you can see, it wasn't an amazing Friday-to-Sunday for Hollywood, but at the very least they can all say that they did far better than Harold Cronk's Unbroken: Path to Redemption. The Christian-themed film made enough to get into the Top 10, but it also received the worst reviews of the fresh features; and while it was released in only about 1,600 screens, it also had a weak per-theater average.
All of that is a pretty big bummer to anyone who likes to see the film industry thrive, but things get even more depressing when you look at the numbers for Corin Hardy's The Nun. Everyone predicted that the Conjuring Universe title was going to experience a major second week drop-off, but it still hurts to see movie drop more than 66%. It's still going to make a massive amount of money, as its already made $228 million worldwide, but the big question mark at this point is how it's going to affect the next title in this growing franchise.
Coming up this week we have an eclectic slate of new releases, including Eli Roth's kid-friendly horror The House With A Clock In Its Walls; Jacques Audiard's western The Sisters Brothers; Reed Morano's thriller I Think We're Alone Now; and Dan Fogelman's Life Itself. They should do a nice job shaking up the Top 10, so be sure to return next Sunday to see how everything works out.
