Aubrey Plaza Wants To Play Catwoman, But She'll Have To Get In Line Behind Morena Baccarin And Vanessa Hudgens

The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating life in theaters, with plenty of peaks and valleys to spare. But following the poor performance of Justice League, Warner Bros. pivoted away from big ensemble projects and toward director-driven solo movies. Shazam! and Aquaman had strong outings in theaters, and DC fans are especially eager to see what Matt Reeves will do with The Batman.

Development for The Batman appears to be moving forward, with Robert Pattinson attached to play the title character. Fans are eager to see which actors are cast as members of Batman's rogues gallery, and plenty of stars have already made their intentions known. This includes Parks & Rec icon Aubrey Plaza, who has a particular interest in playing Catwoman. But she doesn't think she'd ever actually get the part. As she recently explained:

Okay, Ive said that in like a couple interviews because I get asked questions like, If you were a superhero, which one would you want to be? And I just always think of Catwoman because I just love that character and I love the Catwoman movie. The Halle Berry one. But its not something I think about every day Im just not gonna even try to get that part. Theres no way in Hell theyre gonna cast me.

Leave it to Aubrey Plaza to be the one defender of Halle Berry's ill-fated Catwoman movie. But it looks like she does have a comic book character in mind, although the rising actress doubts she'd ever actually land the role of Selina Kyle.

Aubrey Plaza's comments come from her recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. While appearing on the talk show to promote her leading role in the Child's Play reboot, eventually the conversation about Catwoman came up. She's made a few comments about wanting to play the role before, something that Colbert was privy to. And since The Batman's cast is being assembled, it seems like the perfect time to broach that subject again.

It's unclear why Aubrey Plaza doesn't think she has a chance of playing Selina Kyle, as the 34 year-old actress' star power was been growing steadily over the past few years. And she's played a comic book villain before, in her acclaimed performance in FX's Legion. But perhaps her concerns aren't with her own performance, but the other actress who are already vying for the role.

All of Aubrey Plaza's antics aside, she does seem to have an interest in playing Catwoman, despite thinking she doesn't have much of a chance to land the part. And she's got some stiff competition, as plenty of actresses have been vying for Gotham's feline femme fatale.

High School musical alum Vanessa Hudgens is the most recent star to put her name in the mix for playing DC's next Catwoman. After fans began posting art of her as Selina Kyle, Hudgens revealed she's been a lifelong fan, and it's actually a dream role. And a piece of fan art that followed showed what she and Robert Pattinson might look like opposite each other in The Batman. It's too bad Zack Snyder isn't the architect of the DCEU anymore, as she has a working relationship with him through the movie Sucker Punch.

But Vanessa Hudgens isn't the only actress who wants to play Catwoman. Morena Baccarin also listed Catwoman as a dream role, and she's already got experience with the DC side of things. After all, she played Dr. Leslie Thompkins for 82 episodes of Fox's show Gotham. Furthermore, she plays Vanessa in the Deadpool franchise, so comic book properties are something Baccarin is familiar with. When she was asked if she'd play the role, Baccarin was previously quoted saying:

It's so true! I've wanted to play Catwoman forever.

Robert Pattinson is the only actor currently attached to The Batman, so just about anything seems possible. The public has no clue which of Batman's rogues director Matt Reeves wants to play with, so there's the chance that Catwoman isn't even included. So perhaps Aubrey Plaza has more time to campaign for the role, and show her range. Fingers crossed.

Whoever ends up being cast as the DC live-action universe's Catwoman is going to have some seriously big shoes to fill. The character is one of the most beloved villains in Batman lore, especially due to her relationship with Batman. As such, she's been adapted onto the big and small screen quite a few times before.

On the movie side of things, the most iconic Catwoman has to be Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. Tim Burton's superheroic sequel is still beloved today, and Pfeiffer's performance has remains synonymous with the character. Pfeiffer played the character with madness and vulnerability, and just about every line she utters is quotable. Plus, there's that killer costume.

Most recently, Anne Hathaway played Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. Hathaway brought the character's skills as a thief to the forefront, as she's seen manipulating police and security at various events in Gotham City. She ultimately got to be a sympathetic character, and helped Batman fight of the forces of evil in the epic threequel.

Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway brought very different interpretations of the character to the big screen, so whichever actress lands the role for the DCEU will have to find a way to distinguish herself from the previous incarnations of Selina Kyle. Aubrey Plaza, Vanessa Hudgens, and Morena Baccarin are three very different actress, who would each have a unique take on the character. We'll just have to see who ends up taking on the mantle.

Why Sarah Silverman Loves Recording Her Ralph Breaks The Internet Lines With John C. Reilly

There are animated pairs that thrive on chemistry. Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Dory (Ellen Degeneres). And in that category, we'd definitely put Wreck-it Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman), the denizens of Disney's favorite arcade game. The pair is back on the big screen this week, and when interviewing Ralph Breaks The Internet star Sarah Silverman, she explained why it's so important that she and Reilly are able to record in the booth together, elaborating:

We always record together. ... John insisted on it, and I'm so grateful for that. Because it just makes a giant difference. We're looking in each other's eyes. We're actually reacting to what we're saying. We can improvise, and we can be loose. We can try to make each other laugh, and try to make each other cry. ... I just think it gives so much soul to it.

John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman first introduced the characters of Ralph and Vanellope in Wreck-it Ralph, a massive animated hit for Disney back in 2012. Animated sequels rarely happen at Walt Disney Studios (Pixar's more interested in continuing franchises), but audiences were so enamored with these two outcasts, so Ralph Breaks the Internet was conceived.

Part of that makes them special, though, is the way that Vanellope and Ralph interact, so it makes sense that Sarah Silverman would single out the recording process when speaking with us about Ralph Breaks the Internet.

We've always kind of wondered why all vocal talents don't choose to record together. It's still a form of acting, and if you share a scene with a person, wouldn't you want to run through that scene, and all of its variations, together?

It likely comes down to timing. Animated movies take an eternity in production, and vocal talent can't come by on the regular to work out scenes as animation teams build worlds and sketch scenes. But it sounds like, for Ralph Breaks the Internet, the script was in such a place that John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman were able to record together, and that made all of the difference.

Despite the fact that they started their Marvel Cinematic Universe journey with zero previous blockbuster experience, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have, to date, helmed three of the best films in the entire franchise. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War are individually absolutely outstanding pieces of big screen spectacle, and each one has made a distinct and separate impact on the Marvel world at large.

This isnt easy for many reasons, but particularly because this is a brand that has created more than 20 movies in the last decade, and with each new release comes the demand to experience something fresh and brand new. For the Russos, however, there is a key way to getting that done, and they spoke with me about it this past weekend at the Los Angeles press day for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. Said Joe Russo,

I think we always try to put psychological realism in our movies, and that's the one concept, if you go back and look at Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Infinity War, is there is a level of psychological realism beyond these fantastical costumes and fantastical circumstances that people are behaving in a way that feels psychologically truthful. And I think that tone is one of the ways that you can alter movies that are in a series from one another. It's one of the more significant ways you can do that. And trying to distinguish Endgame from Infinity War, I would certainly say that Endgame has a very different tone than Infinity War had.

Admittedly the Russos havent yet gone to the extreme of making a super fun, colorful adventure along the lines of Ant-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy, but there is definitely a noticeable gradient in the tone of their Marvel Cinematic Universe features. Whats more, there has also been a significant progression. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a dark movie, playing with the aesthetic of a 1970s conspiracy thriller, but things get significantly darker in Captain America: Civil War when our heroes turn on each other and eventually disband. And as melancholy as that film gets, it still cant hold a candle to Avengers: Infinity War, which features one of the most devastating endings in blockbuster history.

This, of course, leads us to Avengers: Endgame, and keeping in mind the Russos past, their comments about the film are exceptionally curious. Theres been some expectation that the upcoming sequel would share tonal qualities with its predecessor, given that the lead characters are all trying to pick up the pieces of their world after half their friends turned to dust, but Joe Russos comments suggest otherwise. But what does a very different tone mean, exactly? Does it mean that its going even further into the darkness than what weve previously seen them do in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or could it be that Avengers: Endgame is actually way more of a funny, fun ride than the marketing has suggested?

Its an interesting mystery, and one that wont have its answer revealed in the various trailers for the film. To date we have maybe seen a grand total of five minutes of footage from the blockbuster, and that equates to a little less than three percent of the full three hour movie. As weve seen with plenty of trailer remixes in the past, its possible to create any kind of tone with any kind of footage, so its not impossible that every preview weve seen for Avengers: Endgame has been hiding the blockbusters true nature.

We already thought that we know jack diddly about what to really expect from Joe and Anthony Russos fourth Marvel movie, but this quote honestly takes that sentiment even further. Fortunately, we wont be tortured by this for too much longer, as Avengers: Endgame will be hitting theaters worldwide in less than three weeks specifically on April 26th.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't shied away from releasing ensemble-led movies, but Avengers: Infinity War is on another level entirely. With dozens of MCU characters returning and a handful of new characters being introduced, Infinity War is juggling a lot of players, and while that's great for the moviegoers who've read Marvel Comics for years and wanted to see this big a team-up realized on the big screen, it's nonetheless a daunting task including so many folks in the story. To that end, Infinity War writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus noted that the upcoming Marvel movie will feel a little like Game of Thrones, a show with one of the biggest TV casts of all time, in how it brings these MCU characters the closest they've ever been to one another. As the duo explained:

McFeely: One of the challenges we've had is, how do you make sure this is not 25 people moving from one scene to one scene to one scene? So we talk, being a little facetious about it, but we talk about how it's like Nashville [the movie], right? So you've got 4 or 5 different stories weaved together and then come together and then break apart. So, you get all these different pairings and groupings of 4 and 5 and 6.Markus: And even now, not unlike something like Game of Thrones, where you have this vast canvas with characters... you've been watching this guy over here molesting this girl over here in the East for years, and only now does it have that feeling of massive plates shifting and finally bringing these characters near each other.

Because Avengers: Infinity War boasts such a large cast, I get Stephen McFeely's comparison with the 1975 movie Nashville; it'd be almost impossible to ensure that all these characters are sharing scenes together, hence why it's necessary to split off into groups. Next year brings Avengers 4, which is no longer being considered the second half of the same story Infinity War is telling, but will still build off the events of the third Avengers movie. Avengers 4 shot back-to-back with Infinity War last year, so it was just as important to pull off the same kind of balancing act with the cast. While no Avengers 4 plot details have been released yet, ideally that movie will allow for different interactions and pairings from what we saw in Infinity War to spice things up a bit.
