Watch Donald Glover Bring Lando To Saturday Night Live

We're just a few short weeks away from the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but you'd be forgiven for wishing it was called Lando instead. Much of that has to do with the fact that Lando is portrayed by Donald Glover, an incredibly talented guy who can act, write, and sing. Well, he can now add host SNL to that list because Glover hosted a pretty entertaining episode of the long-running sketch show last night. Among the memorable sketches, Glover gave a taste of his take on Lando ahead of the spin-offs debut and you can check that out below.

Donald Glover may not have made it past the audition (twice!) but he returned Saturday Night Live as the host and musical guest. As should come as no surprise to most, Glover took to his job easily, leading several funny sketches and helping to elevate a few that needed an extra boost. While SNL had plenty of movie-themed sketches last night (including A Quiet Place), perhaps the most buzzworthy belonged to Glover showing off his Lando Calrissian in a Star Wars themed sketch that tried to answer one important question: Where are all the black humans in the galaxy?

In the sketch, Glover's Lando has founded a conference on Naboo to assemble all the black humans in the galaxy. He anticipated thousands of people showing up but it turns out that there's only about four total. As Lando says, there's a bunch of lizards in vests but not that many black people. The lack of representation in Star Wars has long been a major and justifiable critique of the series and SNL poked some serious fun at that. Lando kicked the conference off by introducing Saw Gerrera (Kenan Thompson), who fans may remember from fellow Star Wars spin-off Rogue One. Saw tried to honor all the black humans who had come before him but was only able to name Mace Windu.

Leslie Jones' character then took the stage and after a way too forward kiss on the hand from Lando, she announced that due to low attendance, all the events except meals have been canceled ("Even the thousand man march?" "What do you think, dude?!"). The sketch ended with Lando revealing that before he made his money playing cards or whatever else he does, he wanted to be a singer and becomes to croon "Making Love in Space," with Max Rebo on the keys. It's honestly a pretty weak ending to the sketch, but that's SNL for you.

Elizabeth Banks Reveals Her Charlie's Angels Reboot Pitch

The Charlies Angels franchise returns to the big screen this year with a brand new film starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska and Elizabeth Banks. Elizabeth Banks isnt just acting this time around though; she is also one of the films credited screenwriters, and this will mark her second time directing a film. Elizabeth Banks is also producing the new Charlies Angels through her Brownstone Productions and she brought a specific pitch in mind for the reboot, as she explained:

I thought you could expand the world beyond three women on the beach in California and relaunch it as a global spy franchise. I thought about [the detective agency's faceless boss] Charles Townsend as the basis of it, and the '70s, which is when I was born, and the women's movement over the past 40 years. And I thought about what a really wealthy man who was a benefactor to these women in the '70s would have grown that organization into over 40 years.

The previous Charlies Angels films and TV shows have primarily focused on a trio of women, Charlies titular Angels, working for the Townsend Agency, a crime-fighting detective agency. The new film will also center on a trio, but for her pitch, Elizabeth Banks took that concept and blew it up, reimagining the Townsend Agency as a global enterprise, with spies, Angels and Bosleys all around the world. Thus the film can also act as a sequel and not a total reboot.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks mentioned the womens movement over the past several decades and how if the wealthy and mysterious Charles Townsend had this agency in the '70s and was supporting these women back then, what would his next steps have been. The thought being that Charlie would have wanted to expand the success of the agency beyond just three women in California, and over the decades it would have grown into a global spy organization.

So Elizabeth Banks pitch for Charlies Angels expanded out the world of the story to give it a different feel and dynamic from the previous iterations. But she also wanted to update the property for modern times and create a film that felt more true to life for women in the world today. Explaining her approach, she continued:

I went back to the original idea in Charlie's Angels, which was that women were in the workforce. And all of the things that I feel are happening in the women's movement right now, whether it be #MeToo, or I say this in a time of dire straits for women's rights in this country right now but I feel like all those things are happening because women are in the workforce in greater numbers than ever in human history. I just wanted to make a movie about women at work, working together. I wanted to make a movie that was not about their boyfriends that they didn't see enough, or the cats they didn't feed, or the mother that they didn't call, because I don't worry about those things in my daily life. And so, in that way, I felt like we were updating the idea of Charlie's Angels.

With the increase in women in the workforce over the decades, 47.3% labor participation in 1976 when Charlies Angels premiered, versus 56.8% in 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Elizabeth Banks wanted to make a movie about women doing their jobs and working together. Those jobs just happen to be for a spy agency fighting international crime.

Its also pretty clear that Elizabeth Banks didnt want to make a movie that failed the Bechdel Test or one that used the same tired stereotypes for female characters. So dont expect Kristen Stewart or Naomi Scotts characters to be lamenting about boy trouble or their relationships with their mothers while they thwart evil. Its encouraging to hear because those clichd things can bore an audience that has seen them countless times if not done exceptionally well.

Instead, the focus in Charlies Angels will be on the Angels working together and their relationships with one another.

It's not exaggerating to say that Avengers: Infinity War is not just one of Marvel's most anticipated movies, but one of the most anticipated superhero movies in general. Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy and others will join forces to prevent Thanos and his minions from obtaining the six Infinity Stones. For years, we've been expecting Infinity War to be released on May 4, but today Marvel announced that the blockbuster will now arrive worldwide on April 27.

In what first seemed like just a casual conversation with Robert Downey Jr. on Twitter, the Marvel Studios social media folks broke the big news that Avengers: Infinity War is being released in theaters a week earlier, which of course necessitates making a slight change to the teaser poster. Marvel was already planning on releasing Infinity War in international territories starting April 25, but now U.S. moviegoers can look forward to seeing it during that same period. We should all be thankful that Mr. Stark... sorry, Downey, had a hankering for an earlier release.This rescheduling also breaks from tradition, as the previous Avengers movies both came out at the beginning of May. With this shift, however, the summer movie season is starting even earlier!

After a decade of existence, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become one of the biggest film franchises of all time, and it's proven that it can release hits to the masses at practically any point in the year. Just look at Black Panther. February isn't normally a month where major blockbusters come out, but after two weeks in theaters, T'Challa's standalone movie has made over $756 million worldwide. Infinity War is already guaranteed to make a lot of money, so moving it to the last week of April probably won't impact its box office draw.

Moving Avengers: Infinity War up a week will likely help another movie coming from the Disney media empire. Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out on May 25, and with Infinity War's date change, that means that the hype for Marvel's biggest movie yet will have died down a little more, giving the next Star Wars movie a better chance to shine rather than be overshadowed. We also can't forget about Deadpool 2 from 20th Century Fox. Disney's purchase of Fox hasn't been finalized yet, but regardless, I suspect an extra week between Infinity War and the Merc with the Mouth's next adventure is welcome among both the studios and moviegoers.
