Idris Elba Wont Be Playing Deadshot In The Suicide Squad After All

Last month, it was reported that due to scheduling issues, Will Smith wouldnt reprise Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot, in The Suicide Squad. Days later, word came in that Idris Elba had been tapped to replace Smith as the assassin, but apparently now plans have changed. Elba is still attached to the sequel, but he wont be playing Deadshot.

According to Variety, Deadshot has been removed from The Suicide Squad by director/writer James Gunn and the rest of the creative team, and Idris Elba will instead play a brand new character. It wasnt revealed who Elba will now be portraying, but evidently it was decided in recent weeks that it was the right move for him to vacate the Deadshot role, as those involved didnt want it to feel as if they were disrespecting Will Smith, who first brought the character to life on the big screen in 2016s Suicide Squad. While it remains to be seen if Smith will ever play Deadshot again, the door is at least now open for him to return at some point rather than being prevented from doing so because Elba took on the Deadshot reins.

So now Deadshot is off the table for The Suicide Squad, although if theres the possibility of Will Smith playing the character again, then naturally Floyd Lawton is still alive in the DC Extended Universe, and is likely either still custody at Belle Reve or managed to escape imprisonment and resume his mercenary duties. In any case, Idris Elba is too big of a Hollywood star for The Suicide Squad team to let go of, so it shouldnt take long for them to find someone else for him to play. Bronze Tiger is a reasonable choice, since like Deadshot, he was one of the original members of the first Task Force X that debuted in the late 1980s. But hes just one of numerous potential candidates on the table, with plenty of others, like Blockbuster and Multiplex, just waiting to be adapted for the big screen.

While The Suicide Squad had previously been described as a total reboot, it will maintain some connectivity with the last Suicide Squad movie through some familiar faces. Margot Robbie is expected to play Harley Quinn again following her return to the DCEU in Birds of Prey, Jai Courtney confirmed that hell reprise Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis is reportedly back as Amanda Waller. There are conflicting reports about whether or not Joel Kinnaman will play Rick Flag again.

However, despite a few Suicide Squad characters returning, The Suicide Squad has been conceived as a relaunch that will feature a mostly new cast. No plot details have been revealed yet, but it will maintain the same premise of incarcerated supervillains going on dangerous, covert black ops missions for the U.S. government in exchange for reduced sentences and other forms of leniency.

Matthew McConaughey Went To Extreme Lengths To Keep Track Of His Serenity Character's Storyline

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for the movie Serenity. If you have not yet seen the film, please continue on at your own risk!

Matthew McConaughey characters have experienced many different kinds of twists over the years, but weve never seen the actor play out anything like what goes down in Serenity. At first the protagonist, Baker Dill, is shown to be a simple fisherman caught up in a noir-esque murder plot, but as the story unfolds he winds up discovering that he is actually fictional and living in a video game. Its a pretty crazy development, but according to writer/director Steven Knight, it was one that McConaughey went the extra mile for in his approach. Said the filmmaker in a recent interview,

I had to have the extra layer, particularly for Baker Dill, [so it was a discussion with] Matthew, because he had to calibrate his character through the impossible business of beginning to question your own reality. It's a fantastic thing - he got this massive sheet of paper and he charted the progress of his character on it with arrows and comments. The thing was just like a visual depiction of a character's unraveling. So he always knew. Obviously we're not shooting in sequence, so you always knew where he was at in terms of 'Am I real, or am I not?' It was an absolutely amazing feat.

When I had the chance to hop on the phone with Steven Knight earlier this month, I took the opportunity to dive into spoiler territory and discuss the development of Serenitys big twist. Part of that discussion included his relationship with Matthew McConaughey through the navigation, and it was in his response that I learned about the actors special inside guide to the mind of Baker Dill. While its not exactly clear what it looked like, apparently the guy went as far as to create a special map of his characters mind.

Those who have seen Serenity know that the whole experience doesnt make for an easy reality shift for Baker Dill, as he certainly has a slight understanding that things are a bit off from the start, but is ultimately pretty blown away by the totality of the truth. Because of this arc, each scene required an understanding of the characters particular mindset at a particular point in time, but clearly this was a challenge that Matthew McConaughey was more than prepared to take on.

Speaking on a larger level about the implementation of the twist in Serenity, Steven Knight offered that part of his thinking for the film was that he wanted to upend the conventional approach to the narrative device specifically in terms of setup. While he understood that he had to give the audience at least a slight inkling that things werent quite what they seemed, he also wasnt terribly interested in an overuse of foreshadowing and laid groundwork. Instead, he wanted the development to feel like it came out of left field, as he explained:

I think a lot of time in storytelling a surprise is set up so that it isn't a surprise. And genuine surprise is difficult because it's not part of conventional way of doing things. So there's a lot of resistance to the idea that you genuinely have a surprise that comes from nowhere. You do have a few [hints], but I tried to do that as little as possible, and it's not what people would normally do.

This approach interestingly makes Serenity a bit different than most twist-centric features, in that its not the kind of movie where you go back to see it a second time and read everything differently than you did before you fully knew where the story was going. This is a film designed for that drop-in-the-lap feeling which certainly can be passed on by people showing the feature to others while you sit next to them watching their face change with the surprise.

That being said, Steven Knight did add that he does still hope that audiences give Serenity multiple viewings just not for the aforementioned typical reasons. Instead, his thinking was that he wanted to give the feature a certain timeless quality, meaning that those who see it in the future wont exactly be able to pin point exactly when it was made. He made the movie with the idea that it can exist as a movie completely independent of the world that is going on outside the room in which it is being screened (interestingly not too dissimilar to the life and actions of the kid who creates the game in which Baker Dill lives). Said Knight,

I hope it will be watched two or three times, and also I think I always like to try and do something that isn't part of whatever's happening right now in terms of film, so that if it's watched in 10 years time it won't be identifiable as a film that was made in 2018, 2019 - that it's not part of the current zeitgeist. So I do hope it will be watched that way.

Its an interesting perspective on the film, but also an accurate one. The main story isnt exactly one that is overly dependent on technology something that dates any film in the modern age and its almost entirely set in a location isolated from the rest of the world. Ignoring the ages of the actors, even watching the Serenity on the big screen today you could think that it is a feature from the 1990s that was brought back to theaters.

Those who want to see Serenity again, or, as mentioned, share the experience with a friend, have the chance to do so right now, with the movie still playing in theaters nationwide sporting a cast including not only Matthew McConaughey, but also Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Diane Lane. A great deal was made regarding the whereabouts of Hawkeye before Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters and after it arrived, fans grew even more concerned. People were afraid that Jeremey Renner's character might not even be in the movie after he was left entirely out of the film's marketing, and as it turned out, he wasn't. While many are still wondering exactly what's going on with their favorite archer, Jeremy Renner has spoken about what it's like to see such support for his character. While he appreciates it, it does seem things might be getting slightly out of hand. According to Renner...

It's a nice feeling, I suppose. I think the Russo brothers got way too many death threats. I'm like, 'Wow, dude, that's intense. I'm sorry!'

It's certainly nice to feel wanted, and Jeremy Renner clearly feels that. We may never have known just how many fans Hawkeye actually had if he had been a regular part of the movie. Fans can certainly be passionate, but death threats to the directors of Avengers: Infinity War seem to be overdoing it a little. Jeremy Renner might be exaggerating to USA Today but it's also possible that fans were so upset about a lack of Hawkeye in the latest Marvel movie that they went after the directors. To be fair, even one death threat qualifies as "too many"

While we know that Jeremy Renner was on set, and therefore must have filmed something, during the back-to-back Avengers 3 and 4 production, we now know that everything he did was actually for next year's big finale, as the actor never appears in Infinity War. We're told in the film that Clint Barton has agreed to a deal with the government to be placed on house arrest, as living a life on the run simply wasn't going to work for the one Avenger that had a family.

Fans began to suspect something was up when various pieces of marketing, from tweets to movie posters, omitted Hawkeye entirely. Whenever the Russo Brothers were asked about it, they would indicate that the fact that we never saw Hawkeye in any trailer or commercial was important to his story, but they, of course, stopped short of explaining it was because him not being in the movie was part of that story.

What exactly Avengers 4 has in store for Hawkeye is unclear, though odds are it won't be good. The man had a family, and with half of all life in the universe gone, probability dictates that he's lost some of them to Thanos, giving him as much motivation as anybody to take the fight to the Mad Titan. We'll find out for sure when Avengers 4 arrives next year.
